Wooden Sash Windows Create A Vintage Appearance

Sash windows are a traditional design that dates back several centuries. They tend to have a striking historic appearance, particularly when made from natural timber rather than modern materials like aluminium and high quality plastic (uPVC). It is a proven design, if regularly maintained, that has been provided decades of reliable service.

The design features a frame set into the wall and sliding glass panels that move within that wall-set frame. This movable perimeter makes the design vulnerable to air draughts unless it manufactured well and then regularly maintained. Natural shrinking or warping of the material used to manufacture the window, as well as its normal wear and tear, creates gaps around the perimeter allowing draughts to develop.

Air draughts through defective windows should desirably be eliminated as soon as they emerge. Air draughts allow pollutants such as pollen, dust and fine sand particles to enter the home. This can be particularly detrimental for allergy sufferers. Draught proofing windows will reduce risks arising from complaints such as hay fever.

One often cited weakness, perhaps more apparent than real, is that the design is vulnerable to air draughts unless the window is manufactured and maintained to tight specifications. Natural shrinkage and the warping of wood, plus normal wear and tear, can create air gaps around the window perimeter allowing draughts to occur.

Moreover, in the case of wood frames, the putty used to form a seal between the glass panes and their supporting wood members can dry and crack so as to degrade the quality of the seal. This is another reason why annoying air draughts can develop.

In conclusion, regular maintenance of sash windows helps to keep a house more energy efficient, keeping its internal temperature comfortable with minimal assistance from air conditioning. It also means that you have better control over your power spending. Lastly, regular maintenance means your window will always look good.
