What Are Chartered Accountants - Defined

Countries outside of the United States refer to their registered bookkeepers as chartered accountants. These people are required to be members of a professional organization within their own country. For example, in Sri Lanka they must become members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Sri Lanka.

Many differences are found from country to country as to requirements for this type of title. However, the difference between a person who is considered chartered and one who is not is their level of education and testing that has been done. Once they become a member of this group they are required to continue building their skills and knowledge through refresher classes and seminars.

The first professional body of accounting was formed by a group of chartered accountants in Britain back in 1854. Since that time many more organizations have been formed. Within the United States of America these would be referred to as a Certified Public Accountant. Individual governing rules and regulations are created within the group themselves. In addition each country has their own requirements regarding the ability to perform of each person.

Within Canada these people are referred to as CAs. Until recently only registered members were allowed to practice auditing functions for a public company. However, every country has their own variations on what is acceptable and what is not. Registrations and licensing is only useful in the country where it was obtained. Currently the guidelines are too different to allow true international accounting.

Receiving a license or becoming certified as an accountant is a big decision. For those within the United States it can be a very expensive decision as well. The US has one of the highest education requirements of any of the countries who provide certification to their bookkeepers. In the US a person needs to complete a four year degree in accounting as well as take further classes beyond that in certain required fields.

The CPA exam in the US is made up of several different parts. A person needs to be very dedicated to their career to reach the final level of becoming a CPA. It is estimated that of those who proceed to the point of applying for the CPA license, only a little more than 80% are successful on their first attempt.

In a nutshell, the difference between chartered and non-chartered is simply a matter of organizational membership. Many may have the ability to do the things that the members do but either choose to not join the professional organization or for some reason are not allowed to join.

Sash windows first made their appearance in the mid seventeenth century and many of those fine crafted windows are still to be seen in numerous historic buildings around the world. Hand-crafted in a time when craftsmen took great pride in their work and skill these wooden frames have stood the test of time. But the normal wear and tear over hundreds of years and exposure to the elements has left many of these fine examples in need of serious sash window refurbishment.

Made up of two frames traditionally in a two by three pane combination these windows move freely up and down their wooden runners. Old frames have shrunk and become worn with regular use and are now loose fitting and draughty.

When restoring an old building a person often has to make tough decisions not only for the short term but for the long term cost effectiveness. Replacing bad-fitting frames with better fitting windows can save money by reducing heating bill costs although aesthetically they might not be as appealing.

Many firms do refurbishment on site but one needs to realize that repairing wood is a labor intensive occupation and therefore expensive. Frames that have pieces chipped out or broken can be repaired with insets instead of being completely replaced.

New methods of draught proofing and weather strips have gone a long way to improve insulation. Noise proof glass is now also available on the market that one could used to replace old panes to lower noise levels. An inside locking device can be installed which allows a person to open windows slightly for ventilation purposes but stops them from being opened further to allow illegal access. These locking devices are easy and quick to remove in case of an emergency.

However once these frames have been restored, treated and repainted with any new sealants and paints readily available one may have the joy of continuous use of these beautiful unique windows that are infinitely pleasing and low maintenance bills.

Even though new frames that are aesthetically pleasing are available nowadays it is still not a decision to be taken lightly. Once old original sashes have been removed they and the special character they gave the house will be lost forever.

The cost of refurbishment may seem exorbitant at first glance but if one weighs up all the pros and cons a sash window refurbishment may be the best option regardless of initial expense estimates.

Learning About The Cultural Importance Of Sash Windows

Sash windows are the familiar ones that consist of one or move panels of glass panes separated by narrow strips of wood. This type of window has been used since Georgian times in England and all of the regions of the world influenced by its empirical expansion.

Although the origin of this style is not completely established (by a registered patent, for instance), the creator is generally held to be an English scientist and inventor, Robert Hooke. He was instrumental in rebuilding London after its Great Fire of 1666, being named official surveyor and designing many of the principal buildings built in the 70s. Hooke used his knowledge of clock making and studies in gravity to create his innovative design, one which has never gone out of fashion.

The window, which consists of one or more movable panels set with panes to let in light and with a sash which can be raised and lowered for ventilation, was used more often than any other in Georgian and Victorian architecture. Thus it became a part of the heritage of many. Remember that the father 'threw up the sash' and looked out on St. Nick and his tiny reindeer.

Think of the cat burglars who scale tall buildings and open a window high above the ground to steal the royal jewels, or how Spiderman comes and goes. Think about getting inside yourself when you have misplaced your key. A sash comes in might handy then. It is also useful for eavesdropping, when secrets are being told inside.

How about pies left to cool on a window sill, a traditional lure for hungry boys or vagrants passing by? How many best friends or lovers have tossed pebbles at the window to encourage someone to come out for adventure or romance? How many college boys have serenaded their lady through an open window of a sorority house?

Of course, reality is that it is easy to keep intruders out and that not every young lady is susceptible to visits after hours. However, romance is also served when lacy curtains flutter in the breeze coming through a half-open window or a graceful bird swoops in and out again. The sound of children playing or birds singing can come sweetly through an open window and is an important part of summertime memories.

Sash windows are still fashionable and eminently practical after all these years. It is hard to think about a day when children won't be drawing houses with tic-tac-toe windows and a lolly pop tree in the yard. Changes in the design may have made cleaning easier and security better, but the essentials are still with us after three centuries.

Conceived and first designed in the sixteen sixties sash windows have been extensively used in constructing many famous and beautiful buildings. With a concept and working mechanism that was so unique in its time that it is still used today and applied to new windows being built with only newer materials incorporated is a great tribute to the original designer.

One can only speculate as to what the original carpenters would have had to say if they were told that hundreds of years later their windows would still be working. Frames from that time that have been looked after work as well today as they did then.

Allowing sashes to move freely along wooden gliders one is able to leave openings at the bottom and top to permit free flowing air through the apertures to cool down the room. When one remembers that this idea is from an era long before electricity and air coolers it was a truly remarkable concept.

Many of the originals are still in stately homes and other historical buildings that have become heritage sites and restoration repair and maintenance of the wood is carefully supervised to keep frames in a condition as close as humanly possible to their original state. However wood is a natural product and as such reacts badly to the elements.

Bad maintenance and poor quality sealants and paint would have left the wood open to severe damage. One finds that there are now a number of excellent companies that have the expertise to repair restore and in some case replace the sashes as well as installing draught-proofing.

Much of this work can be done on site and only in extreme cases will the frame be taken away for total refurbishing. These products are now being manufactured that look as good as the originals and the overseeing councils are giving permission for these to be installed in buildings where frames have been too badly damaged.

Classical looking new products are also being used to fashion sash windows that have the style to improve the exterior of any building. This new product has many improved features such as being able to shut securely and tightly and tend to be easy to maintain.

There is however nothing as appealing a wood and new timber sash windows manufactured today would give any home an old fashioned elegance of an era long forgotten. To create one's own private sanctuary of style and sophistication a person may just decide to follow this route.
