At this time homeowners are staying longer in their existing homes due to difficult economic conditions. These homes eventually need repairs and owners forced to stay in a home still want to upgrade, or make improvements where they are. This creates the possibility for someone to start a sash window repair company for a true recession proof career.

Many homeowners at this time owe more on their home mortgage than they can sell the house for. This prevents them from selling their homes and moving. Others are unable to satisfy the new stringent requirements to finance another home. The option of upgrading to another home is not currently an option for most people. They will cope by improving and making the best of their current home.

These older houses often have sash windows. These units have many excellent features. They look nice, can be easily cleaned inside and out from inside the house, and can open fifty percent of their surface.

They efficiently circulate the home's air, and cool it on warm days. When the top pane is opened downward and the bottom one upward, the hot air rising to the ceiling will exit at the top, drawing cooler air in at the bottom. This reduces the need for forced air systems.

They open easily since the weight of the pane is balanced against weights hanging inside the frame. Those weights are suspended by chains or cords running through pulleys at the top. Weatherproofing is compressed around the edges and holds the panel where desired, through friction.

As time passes, if they are not maintained and repaired, these systems can go terribly wrong, causing the opposite effects from those they were designed to provide. The soft wood they are constructed of can rot, deform, swell or shrink. The weight cords can fray and break or the pulleys fail to move freely, or stop moving completely. In these cases the windows vibrate and allow heat or cool air to escape. They may stick and only open part way, or fail to move at all. They can slam shut of their own accord causing cracked panes, nervousness of the inhabitants, and broken fingers, which may be resting on the sill at the time.

All that is needed is a little attention from time to time from a skilled and knowledgeable person. They can be restored to the desirable, superior functioning they had when new. This provides an opportunity to start a sash window repair company for a true recession proof career.
