Purchasing things such as a hamburger, coffee, or a soft drink in a fast food restaurant always include the use of a recyclable container. This has been found to be a fast and economical way to present this type of meal. It has also been found that take away food packaging is good for customer retention.

Containers from drive-through restaurants are being used in various ways. This began when McDonald's, in 1989, made headlines after switching from non-recyclable Styrofoam to recycled cardboard boxes and paper wrappers. They also made several other environmentally friendly changes in containers which led the way for other fast meal chains.

Many companies followed suit, making internal policy changes that addressed the concerns of environmentalists. This was a proactive response to reduce landfill wastes and pollution in order to help clean up the air and water. What they found was that their customer base began to increase not only because this type of food was convenient, but so were the containers.

Recent research has shown that 80% of meals people eat is composed of drive-through meals. In addition, 20% of those researched eat while on the move. This was unheard of not long ago. As a result, drive-through companies have developed new recycled packages to meet the needs of those who need to eat when in their car or when traveling.

New types of containers was a beginning, but new technologies have not stopped there. Biofuels are now made from used cooking oil that are used to heat homes, produce energy, and even run vehicles. The importance and challenge has not been lost on the Environmental Protection Agency who now acknowledge the efforts of those who are finding new ways to reuse cardboard, paper, and polystyrene.

Using take away food packaging is good for customer retention. It is lightweight and minimizes the need for secondary packages. It is turning out not only to be great for the environment, but for consumers as well.
