Parcel packaging advice for businesses

Businesses which regularly send parcels and packages to both national and international destinations will need to choose a parcel delivery service carefully. Just as important as this, however, is learning how to properly package up your shipments to prevent damage and to ensure that every order arrives at its destination safely.

The size of the package is the first thing to consider. Make sure it fits the contents of the parcel perfectly. If your boxes and containers are under-filled, the contents are more likely to rattle around and sustain damage, and the container itself may even collapse. However, over-filled packages may burst.

Once you've chosen an appropriate sized container for your shipment, the next thing to think about is cushioning. This is essential to prevent your parcel contents from moving about and becoming damaged during transit.

Fragile items should always be placed at the centre of the package and surrounded by suitable padding materials. Liquids, on the other hand, should be stored in leak-free containers and sealed with a plastic bag. This will prevent them from spilling and contaminating the rest of the contents of the parcel.

To seal up your package before the parcel delivery firm arrives to pick it up, you could use strapping or very strong tape to secure the box. Along with the address details, you should also remember to put labels on the outside of your package to provide handling details for the carrier. For example, you may want to include a 'this way up' or a 'fragile - handle with care' label on your package.

There are certain things you should remember not to do when preparing parcels for delivery, as well as things you should always do. These include not over-sealing the parcel, for the benefit of customs officials, and not using any packing materials that are made of cloth or fabric.
