A common practice of computer maintenance that every user should be aware of is to wait until the Windows operating system shuts downs before turning off the power switch. Not doing so creates a lot of problems with the hard drive and with Windows itself. To avoid further problems with the computer especially during power outages, using an Uninterruptible Power Supply for the PC is a great help. The key function of UPS is to protect your PC from both power outages and from surges in voltage. Without a UPS, there is a big possibility that your computer will crash.

To keep your hard drive functioning properly, you can run Scandisk and Defragment at least once every month. Installing anti-virus software and similar products might be useful too. Also, ensure that your C: drive has adequate free space for Windows to use. Running out of free space could result in your PC functioning really slow.

Delete the programs in your hard drive that you don't necessarily need. Doing this will give you more space in your hard drive. A dependable and fast hard drive cleaner is also necessary. However, please do make a copy of your important files before running this cleaner.

Next in line is the anti virus software and the virus checkers. Use programs such as Norton Antivirus regularly and keep your machine free from viruses. If you require more protection, then install firewall programs. A firewall shields the Windows PC from malware and hackers. It is especially beneficial for internet connections of high speed.
