The telephone retains its popularity as an effective marketing channel for sales growth. Closing that sale over the phone though, isn't as easy as it appears to be. As a marketer, you can only utilise the phone's full potential for promotion, if and only if, you make use of proper phone etiquette and adequate phone selling skills.

Contrary to popular belief, the application of selling on phone strategies is not selective. Whether you are doing outbound calls or inbound calls, the rules prescribed for telemarketing don't change. Your goal is to make the other receiving on the other end of the line feel your presence and appreciate your desire to help.

Believe it or not, selling on the phone is more challenging for a number of reasons. As opposed to face to face interactions, communicating via phone requires you to manipulate paralinguistic cues such as accent, tone and speed of speech with proficiency.

Simple Phone Tips You Can Use To Sell On Phone

Closing a sale over the phone sounds unattainable for many people. However, with persistence, patience and talent, it can definitely be completed.

Listed below are some tips on how to engage callers and sell on phone:

Answer the phone by the second ring. Often considered a breather, the first ring allows you to condition yourself before you answer. On the other hand, do not let several rings go by without answering.

Smile before you pick up the phone. Smiling isn't only good for your facial muscles, it is also good for your telemarketing approach. A smile makes you feel better and adds a pleasant touch to your speaking voice.

State your name. Do not wait for the caller to ask who you are. Present yourself after greeting the caller and reinforcing your company name. Being proactive conveys the concept of accountability.

Speak intelligibly. Don't talk too fast or too slow. Slow speech implies boredom. Hurried speech, on one hand, signals pressure and anxiety. In phone conversations, clarity is a must. Unintelligible speech should be avoided because it prevents your listener from understanding what you're trying to say.
