3PL providers are third party specialist that work in a specific economic area for specific customers. Accommodation of marketing demands can be expected from and particular firm. If necessary, a firm will be able to provide services that go beyond what is expected from the logistics domain. Production and procurement of merchandises are usually the primary focus of any service firm.

Third-party management workers are able to provide and integrate different forms of services. One can expect a logistics firm to offer subcontracted logistic and transportation. Courier companies and freight forwarders are the most common servers that work with companies in the realm of logistics.

If the activities that are expected are limited to distribution and transportation to warehouses then customers are best to look into the standard logistics provider. The basic form of logistics are provided based on the customer's request. Any other services beyond warehousing and distribution are not available but some firms may provide pick and pack for an additional cost.

A service developer is a bit more advanced and has members that are equipped with a strong foundation in economics and IT. In addition to providing standard services, other more advanced services are also provided. There are limitations since a firm in this category does not have full control of a customer's logistics department.

A custom adapter and developer are the highest form of provider because of the processes and activities available. A firm of this category can usually obtain complete control of a customer's logistic activities. The customer base for this particular firm is a bit small since activities performed are very extensive and detailed.

Affiliations with 2PL firms are somewhat common with 3pl providers. In certain circumstances in which a couriers own air crafts or when shipping lines own a store houses is when a customer can expect the combination of these two firms. It possible that a third-party firm simply provides services that are common of 2PL firms.
